Also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, this day marks the end of Pitru Paksha. Rituals performed today honor all ancestors, including those whose exact date of passing is unknown.  Families perform Shradh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan during the afternoon (Aparahna Kaal) and give charity in memory of departed souls.
